Jakob Ingebrigtsen had not raced in 11 months. He had Achilles surgery in the United States in February 2026. He failed to progress from the 1500m heats at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships and finished tenth in the 5000m final with a body that was already breaking down. Then on August 10th at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham he walked onto the track for the first time in nearly a year and won his fourth consecutive European 5000m title in 13:15.29 — sitting at the back, waiting, and producing a trademark finishing kick in the final 100 meters that nobody in the field could answer. When asked if he was at full fitness he said maybe 88 to 92 percent. And then he said from here he is going to be astonishing.
