Jakob Ingebrigtsen just returned to competitive racing after almost a year away, major Achilles surgery, and a 2026 season that was expected to be over before it even began and somehow he walked away with European Championship gold. Racing the men's 5000 meters in Birmingham with no tune-up races, Jakob stayed patient through most of the final before unleashing an unbelievable closing sprint.

But the victory becomes even more incredible when you look at what Jakob had to overcome. After struggling with his left Achilles through the 2025 season, he underwent surgery in January 2026 and faced months of rehabilitation before surprisingly announcing his return to Birmingham. He skipped the 1500 meters and went straight into the 5000m final against athletes who had been racing all season.
