Jakob Ingebrigtsen is finally coming back after nearly a year away from racing, but his return is not happening the way anyone expected. After Achilles surgery and months without a single competitive race, the two-time Olympic champion has chosen to race the 5000 meters at the European Championships in Birmingham while skipping the 1500 meters the event that made him famous.
The decision becomes even more surprising when you look at who will be missing from the 1500 meters. Josh Kerr, one of Ingebrigtsen's biggest rivals, is also sitting out the event after choosing to focus on another major competition. That leaves the door open for athletes like Jake Wightman and Isaac Nader while Ingebrigtsen faces his own massive test in the 5000 meters.
