Jakob Ingebrigtsen's comeback was supposed to be the biggest story of the night. Instead, his post-race comments turned the entire situation into controversy.

After finishing fourth in Brussels, Ingebrigtsen called the field "cowards" and singled out Cole Hawker, accusing him and his team of using a pacemaker strategy to fool the field. But the situation quickly became even more complicated when it emerged that the pacemaker change had already been announced before the race.

Cameron Meyers, the 20-year-old who beat Ingebrigtsen, had a very different view. He simply explained that sitting behind the pace allowed him to save energy before making his move at the finish.

Then Norwegian Olympic champion Bjørn Rodal publicly criticized Ingebrigtsen's comments, arguing that his rivals deserved credit for racing intelligently.

The following morning, Ingebrigtsen apologized for calling the runners losers — but continued to stand by his criticism of Hawker and his team.

Now the controversy could follow him into Budapest, where Josh Kerr, Cole Hawker, Cameron Meyers and Fanuel Koech could all be waiting.

The question is no longer just whether Jakob Ingebrigtsen can return to his best.

It's whether he can turn the frustration of his comeback into motivation — or whether this controversy will become an even bigger distraction.
