Josh Kerr and Jakob Ingebrigtsen have one of the fiercest rivalries in modern track and field. After Kerr beat Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m at the 2023 World Championships and defeated him again in the 2024 Prefontaine Classic mile, their competition became about more than just times and medals. Public comments added fuel to the rivalry, and fans were waiting for their next major showdown at the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.

But the rematch took an unexpected turn when Ingebrigtsen withdrew from the 1500m after winning the 5000m. Kerr seized his opportunity, winning the final in 3:29.35 before another remarkable season that included a mile world record. In this video, we break down the Budapest race, Kerr's rise, Ingebrigtsen's comeback from injury, and the war of words between two elite middle-distance runners.
