Jakob Ingebrigtsen had not raced in almost eleven months. His left Achilles was operated on in early February 2026 in Palo Alto, California, where surgeons cleaned scar tissue out of the sheath around the tendon, and nearly everyone in the sport wrote off his entire season. Instead, he walked into Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on August 10, 2026, for the 5000m final at the European Athletics Championships. There were no heats. It was a straight final on opening night, his first race of any kind in 2026, against a field led by European record holder Dominic Lobalu, world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier, and Germany's Florian Bremm.
