After 11 months without racing, the reigning European 5000m champion arrived at the 2026 European Athletics Championships with serious questions surrounding his fitness.

He had undergone surgery on his left Achilles tendon earlier in 2026 and had only around six weeks of real training before returning to championship racing.

Then the men's 5000m final began.

And at 3,000 meters, Ingebrigtsen was sitting around 18th place, more than three seconds behind the leaders.

For a runner who normally controls races from the front, it looked completely unfamiliar.

The field had every reason to believe they could beat him.

France's Jimmy Gressier was the reigning world 10,000m champion.

Germany's Florian Bremm had recently improved his 5000m personal best from 13:09 to 12:56.

Switzerland's Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu arrived in strong form after winning in Monaco.

With 23 runners and no pacemakers, the tactical race was becoming increasingly dangerous for Ingebrigtsen.

Then Gressier attacked with five laps remaining.

The pace increased.

The field compressed.

And chaos followed.

Between 4,200 and 4,400 meters, Mike Foppen and Andreas Fjeld Halvorsen went down in a collision, while Nicholas Griggs lost a shoe.

Ingebrigtsen survived the chaos.

At the bell, Gressier led a group of nine.

Ingebrigtsen was third.

Still waiting.

Then came the final 150 meters.

Florian Bremm launched a wide attack around Gressier — and suddenly Ingebrigtsen was boxed against the rail.

For a moment, it looked like his championship might be over.

But he didn't panic.

He didn't move wide.

He waited.

At approximately 60 meters to go, the gap finally opened.

And Ingebrigtsen exploded through it.

He produced a sub-12.75-second final 100 meters and closed the final lap in 54.94 seconds.

Final result:

???? Jakob Ingebrigtsen — 13:15.29
???? Florian Bremm — 13:15.60
???? Etienne Daguinos — 13:16.09
4️⃣ Jimmy Gressier — 13:16.36

Just 0.31 seconds separated Ingebrigtsen from Bremm.

The victory gave Jakob his fourth consecutive European 5000m title, following his championships victories in 2018, 2022 and 2024.

It also extended his unbeaten European Championship streak across the 1500m and 5000m to 15 consecutive finals.

And perhaps the most fascinating part was that Ingebrigtsen himself wasn't completely convinced beforehand.

He admitted:

“I doubted myself every day.”

But when the final lap arrived, the champion was still there.

Eleventh months without racing.

Only six weeks of serious preparation.

18th place at 3,000 meters.

More than three seconds behind.

Trapped against the rail with 150 meters remaining.

And somehow…

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was European champion again.
